2011 Away Camp (Day 6: Concerts, Intermediates, Apprentices)

We're winding down after a fun, eventful Sunday at Camp.

Today we all went on a 5 mile canoe/kayak trip down the Russian River. We hiked down from the camp in two groups to the launch point. After strapping on our life vests and listening to our river guides' safety speech, we boarded our boats and set off on the river.

The first half of the trip had some small rapids, which our guides helped us traverse. There was a lot of floating and enjoying the beautiful scenery.

We docked at a small beach and picnicked on a bag lunch that was delivered to our lunch spot. While we waited for the food, the boys played in the river. One of the river guides caught a turtle and some frogs that the boys all got to see and touch.

After reapplying sunscreen to everyone, we relaunched into the river and continued our journey. The second half of the trip the boys got to crush a bunch of bushes and branches that were sticking up out of the water. There were a few points where the drivers (mostly the counselors and staff) had to get out and push the canoes through the shallows. The best news to the boys was that there were no spiders in the trees!

We docked at River's Edge Kayak, played in the river a little more and then bused back to camp.

The boys that didn't participate in the canoe trip also had a full day. They hiked down to the river with the rest of the boys and got a lift back to camp. They spent a large part of the afternoon working on their free choice art projects. Here are some of the things they created:

After working on their art projects, they had a picnic lunch on the grassy field in the front of camp where there's an amazing view of the Russian River valley. They then played some games (ninja and a fun circle game) led by CIT, Johann.

When the boys on the canoe trip returned to camp, everyone had some time to rest, relax, and take a shower. Before dinner some of the Concerts and Intermediates practiced their choreography for tour, others played some tennis baseball, threw footballs, or chilled out in the library lounge.

Dinner was a barbeque of veggie hot dogs, hamburgers, potato salad, tabouleh, and chocolate chip cookies.

After dinner, the boys got to choose between auditioning for the talent show and playing capture the flag. The talent show auditions blew us all away. From a juggling act, break dancing, comedic acts, plenty of acapella songs, and a unicycle, this year's talent show is going to be fantastic!

Everyone finished up their day by watching the remainder of the movie they started last night. After all of today's activities, I think they'll sleep well.
